CHAPTER TEN

Folsom State Prison

BEAUTEE

Two days after my birthday, I decided to get my ass up and head up to Represa, California, to visit a level four correctional facility for men located just outside of Sacramento, which housed over four thousand men in an institution designed to house only twenty-five hundred.

I didn’t make this trip often and Kevin knew why. Despite the seven-hour drive from L.A. to Sacramento, not only would I place myself in the line of fire, but if fellow inmates found out that he was married to a FBI agent, his days were as good as numbered. I sometimes wore wigs and other disguises because I couldn’t chance any fuck ups.

This time, I was flying into Sacramento, renting a car, and staying at hotel. The thing with that is I had to go a day early, because I had to be in the visiting line by seven in the morning in order to be guaranteed a visit. This was not a place where I could use my status as a federal agent to get to the front of the line.

Zi was up and gone by eight. I sent him a text message saying that I would be spending a few days with NaNa, and that I would call him later. I knew he would bitch, but he was very understanding of NaNa’s failing health, and need of help and supervision. I reserved a car and made hotel reservations at the Sheraton hotel near the airport in Sacramento. I packed my Coach carryon bag, making sure I had my iPad and all electronic chargers, and headed out the door to LAX.

My flight left in less than two hours and it would only take forty-five minutes to arrive in Sac. That gave me enough time to check if any felons I helped put away were being housed in Folsom.

I hadn’t been answering Kevin’s calls because I wanted this visit to be a surprise, but I also didn’t want the argument that I knew was ahead to happen over the phone.

I had to make sure that I had single bills to order food and for the vending machines while visiting. Most likely Kevin would eat and do all the talking as he always did; while I would listen and fall deeper in love with him.

I hated walking away and leaving him there when the visit was over, but I damn sure didn’t want to change places with him. I was working so hard to free this man, that’s all I ever thought about. I knew that every day he was in there he was fighting for his life.

The worst thing was that he was fighting a battle within himself for allowing this to happen the way it did. A battle that he would never win. On more than one occasion, our phone calls had only been about uplifting him to push on one more day. One day got us one more week. I found myself praying for him more than I prayed for myself.
